The New UMNO was formed in February 1988 and Mahathir was member no 1 while Kak Hasmah was member no 2 and followed by Ghaffar, Anwar, Najib, Abdullah and the rest of the first group of the protem committee at the Federal Level.
Crudely speaking the New UMNO is much younger than my youngest son.
It simply means that a large number of old UMNO members were listed in the New UMNO and there were massive crossovers from the dead UMNO to the newly-registered party, which used the household name, UMNO.
So it would not be fair at all to call Datuk Ibrahim Ali a frog as most of the current leaders of UMNO and its members are nothing more and nothing less frogs themselves…and the chief of all frogs is none other than Mahathir.
Many were shock in disbelief and couldn’t comprehend that Mahathir did not used the Societies Act 1965 section 70 to give life again to the original UMNO if he really meant what he preached.
Meanwhile our losing group was not losing hope and we went to the Supreme Court arbitration and hope to get the old UMNO revived.
We knew anything less than reviving the old UMNO will bring a big split among the Malays as they have lost their premise for their struggles.
As this issue was really very significant in nature, especially for the Malay's struggles and for every Malaysian, Tun Salleh, the Lord President then decided to get all the 9 Supreme Court Judges to preside on the case and this made Mahathir and group’s mind in disorder.
By any legal calculation, UMNO were to be revived through the Supreme Court and Mahathir were prepared to do anything as long as the original UMNO continue to be in demise, as this UMNO would encumber his desire to stay in power.
“Killing the old UMNO is as good as killing the nerves of the Malays,” shouted the late Cik Gu Kahar the UMNO chief of Muar in one of his speeches.
Cik Gu Kahar and many others died not as an UMNO member, together with other great sons of the soil like Tunku Abdul Rahman and Hussein Onn.
Mahathir was not happy with Tun Salleh for deciding to get all the 9 Supreme Court Judges on the bench; he wanted to teach the Head of Judiciary how to do his job and this was the beginning of encroachment and invasion of the Judiciary by the Executive.
Lord President was called and was politely told to only have 3 on the bench, the Judges preferred by Mahathir. Pressing for the resignation of Tun Salleh was not possible as he could only be ousted by his brother Judges.
The only alternative Mahathir had been to advise the King to set up a Tribunal to sack the innocent Lord President.
Mahathir went all out to find slip-ups in Tun Salleh to be expediently used to expel him before the Supreme Court preside on the appeal by some UMNO members to revive the party.
Mahathir was prepared to do anything, as long as the old UMNO is not revived; even to the extent of putting the Judiciary on trial.
The revival of the old UMNO risked him the position as the PM. He knew he was at the lowest ebb of support and he needed to bring everybody to a new party which he could control.
The Tribunal was set up in haste and finally it was set up on the first of May 1988, and today is the exact day of the setting up of the said Tribunal; the Labor Day and a Public holiday and worsts of it all it was on a Sunday.
A thinking person with a bit of grey matter can conclusively deduce who Mahathir was then by looking at the date and the day the Tribunal was set up.
To cut this part of the story short, Tun Salleh was unceremoniously sacked as the Lord President and the move by majority of UMNO members was stopped. Besides Tun Salleh, 5 other Supreme Court Judges became the victim.
Meanwhile Mahathir was busy organizing his new party and big names that he detested like The Tunku, Tun Hussein Onn and Tengku Razaleigh were sidelined and they were barred from joining the party.
Tunku Abdul Rahman then advised and requested TR to set a temporary party in order to cordon this unhappy group from joining the opposition parties and that was how Semangat 46 came into being in the hope that they would be united again when the political temperature came back to normal.
Semangat 46 was just an alternative name for the old UMNO as the constitutions of the party was 100 percent the constitution of the deregistered party by comas and full stop.
We were not allowed to use UMNO as the name of the party as that name was taken away by the new party that Mahathir had just formed.
Using Semangat 46, TR and the group went to Parliament to get the old UMNO to revive but it was instantaneously rejected by the House as we didn’t have the numbers.
Semangat 46 never relented in the effort to get old UMNO to be revived as that was the only party that could unite the members to continue the struggles for the Malays.
After failing the efforts through the court and Parliament, Semangat 46 then went to the people through the General Election in 1990.
Semangat 46 in its manifesto promised to revive the old UMNO if the people were to give them mandate, but the media went all out against the party as they were already under the grip of Mahathir.
We, in Semangat 46 were not able to secure sympathy from the unprofessional mainstream media; instead were unfeelingly bashed by them almost every moment.
The election result went to the favor of BN/the new UMNO and Mahathir had the grip of the situation but the split did not go away.
The slogan ‘Bersih, Cekap, Amanah’ remained a slogan. There was no Bersih, no Cekap and no Amanah in the government.
Mahathir hard hit criticisms on Abdullah’s administration as corrupt was fair but the corrupt practices at this length could not have been developed within 5 years of Abdullah’s administration.
Corruption to this extent must have been developed in at least 2 decades and Mahathir should also take accountability for this unhealthy and heinous practices.
What Abdullah failed miserably was to combat the massive corrupt practices that he inherited from Mahathir’s administration.
Mahathir meanwhile was on the alert at all time to find anything that may lie on in way that might be of hindrance to him politically.
To him politics is mighty, and to much extent he made believed that everybody was not above law except UMNO with him as the leader.
He had another encumbrance which was not finished, that was the Malay Ruler; which he had earlier in 1983 initiated to curtail their power in a small Constitutional Crisis.
However, the height of the Constitutional Crisis at last came in 1993; and it started when Tengku Majid of Johore hit one of the hockey coaches whom I have forgotten his name.
This occurrence came by as an expedient device for Mahathir to go for another round of war against the rulers.
Oh yes, I have isolated comments against me and 1 of them said that I was writing shit. But he did not elaborate which part of my writing is shit.
What I wrote were all in the mainstream media when the incidences happened and I am merely reminding everyone as it is important for one to know the truth.
The shenanigans of Mahathir in Malaysian politics are not small. Bear in mind that the current adversities in Malaysian political ambience originated from his administration.
I shall try to elaborate the issue probably in the next 1 or 2 postings after this.

Mr Aspan,
ReplyDeleteMahathir used to say that UMNO was punished by the court and he did not lift a finger to revived UMNO.
But when others went to court to do the needful for the revival of the party, he in turn punish the Judges.
Mahathir and those who believe him would not like your guts. And they cant argue with sensible argument.
The most they can say is..."awak memfitnah! awak saja-saja benci Mahathir" itu sahaja.
Aspan! Just write what you know. You dont worry about their attacks....they enjoy being deceived you see?
Saya dulu tak tahu yang Tun Salleh kena pecat dia tak mahu ikut telunjuk Mahatthir.
ReplyDeleteMacam mana orang bole percaya dengannya?
Aspan,
ReplyDeleteYour writing is making us feel that Dr M is so big, very bog, unlimitedly big and I felt that you are worshipping him through the door of hatred.
Love and hate are quite intimately close. It is like going to the East but arriving in the West or going to the West and arriving in the East.
wassalam
yy
So what is your point here? To ask Malay for unite or to keep telling all only bad things about mahathir's politic?
ReplyDeleteOr you will feels forever happy to tell the story that can make other Malays continuously in dilemma when talking about unity?
And what actually you can gain in positive way if you succeed in makes people hate Mahathir?
Bukan UMNO lagi, UMNO hanya penting kan "Melayu UMNO". Panggil TR dan buat pertubuhan baru. Kita manifest kan perjuangan yang suatu ketika dulu UMNO bawa kan. Itu yang rakyat hendak sekarang. Kita harus ke hadapan bukan ketinggalan.....
ReplyDeleteTR did not bring UMNO to court. It was the group of 11 who did it, and subsequently made UMNO deregistered.
ReplyDeleteTr only came in to fight for the revival of that deregistered UMNO.
This is the reason why I keep on writing on this issue as many still think that TR was the one who brought UMNO to court.
If this misconception still exist I am going to continue on writing to straighten the numerous misconceptions on certain leaders because of others.
Bro I hope and pray that people will slowly think the wisdom of knowing the crude facts however painful it is.
Fauzi,
ReplyDeleteYou are indeed a person who concerns about unity and to forget the past hateful happenings.
I appreciate your opinion, but I am also concern that the pasts gives too bad the consequences to current political circumstances.
Know the mistakes of the past can be good for the existing leaders not to repeat the same misadventure committed by past leaders.
I am not enjoying to write about past, but I am just reminding everyone of us to be very sensitive to the feelings of our people as most of them are not in the position to express their own inside feelings on many matters that concern them.
Thanks a lot for your insights on the past. I was too young in the 80's and with no way to learn such a important part of our nation's history, your article certainly gave me a deep inside on what actually transpired. I really enjoy your articles and will look forward to your next article.
Thank you so much for your series of informative articles. You confirm for us what we as non Malays suspected of Mahathir & his cohorts. So many who profess to be more Malay than malay are only in it for corrupt power & ill gotten wealth. We respected the UMNO of old and felt the nation was in the hands of law abiding leaders....but in the last 25 years the law has been manipulated at the international reputation of our beloved country and we are led by rogues & 'lanun'. We hope and pray for peace, order, unity to prevail. Prosperity is sure to follow! Once again thank you for the bottom of our hearts.
ReplyDeleteini la akibatnya kalau kita org melayu membiarkan org lain menjadi pemimpin melayu...benarkah mahathir itu berjiwa melayu tulen....maka lahir melayu seperti pemberi komen "akusayangumno" & "malaymind"....kesian.....
ReplyDeleteBut who are the captain of the group of eleven. Why dont you tell also the story of Tun salleh Abbas,Tunku Razaleigh and also those who involved in the deregistration of UMNO.They also are part of the story.I think all are involved but only Tun Mahathir had won.And you dont blame Tun Mahathir because he is one of the winnner player but other are loser.Old UMNO or new UMNO are same because UMNO is for Malays.
Malaymind,
ReplyDeleteSaya faham maksud saudara.
But Mahathir was running away with the 'goal post'.
I hope you get the sequent and the situation at that time in a right perspective.
I slowly having the feeling that yoy are an open minded person to dicuss all issues with level headed mind.
Thanks Malaymind. I honestly appreciate your view.
Thank you for your honest retelling of Mahathir's history. I can see that you have a lot of sentiments towards UMNO. Since the Umno ver 1988 deviated from it's righteuos path, we fully support TR to revive the old Umno again.
ReplyDeleteTerus terang saya katakan saya masih lagi belum sampai ketahap sdr.
I admire you dearly for your firm attitude and I see that trend is in the making.
Maybe you are right and let us see what the sequent of events within this 1 or 2 years.
Fauzi, we should meet and let me know when and where.
Thanks bro!
Jepun itu jawab semasa "before coming to Malaysia they say 10% ..now the sign says 20% .I can't afford...so i must go back."
cheers and thanks bro for telling some of the other side of the stories about Mahathir. so far we only listened to one sided stories for 20 years and has already embedded in the minds of the ignorance.
ReplyDeletethats malaysian politics bro! malaysian have been insulted of their intelligence by mahathir.
Dear Aspan,
ReplyDeleteI think we will move to another issue after another. I am also not in a position to defend Mahathir all the way.
To cut it short, probably we think differently about how we perceived things. However, that's not a bad thing anyway.
Personally, I think Ku Li had reached his peak last 20 years in term of support. It will not be easy for a person like him to start all over again but it's not impossible.
But I can assure you that you can't bring Ku Li up if you only focus on bringing Mahathir down. Mahathir too, is already considered season politician now no matter how people need his wisdom.
Fresh blood, new generation is taking over and if Ku Li or his supporter like you still wants to be involved in politics, you should play it like Rais Yatim.
"A deceiving act by Anwar is highly acceptable than the devils potrayed by UMNO and BN". This is the current political situation we are in now. This must be stopped. We must align back the public acceptance for the betterment of our future generation. What we have now, PR, UMNO, BN is only killing time to the public per se. A prolonged scenario will only be detrimental to all concern.
Yes, I should have time for you Encik Aspan, just give me a call at 012-6955242.
Thanks
sir aspan,
ReplyDeletereading your blog is like going to a history class. i believe m'sian at large knew the happiest man is an old fox and the only way to eradicate this fox and all the "foxes" that follow him is by voting BN out in the coming election. Not only UMNO but the whole BN need to be voted out. we need to try a new fox whom all of us hope will create a better future for our children.
luckily, we still had people like Tok Guru, Lim kit siang, aspan alias, saki ibrahim, Ku LI etc...
How,
ReplyDeleteTrue! reading my blog is like attending history class. Boring isn't it?
But I don't blame you at all bro, but to some people the closer we are to the truth, more and more people feel irked by it.
I appreciate your stand that BN should be voted out and that is every individual cardinal right.
Thanks a lot, that you still read my humble opinion however boring it can be.
Thanks.
aspan,
ReplyDeleteit was never boring reading what you wrote but it actually wakes me up.
hope you will not be charged under sedition act, as this is the latest happening in town., Ha!Ha!
Good day, sir
how,
ReplyDeleteI also hope that I will not be charged. You know...who am I that make me fit to be charge! I am just writing history and history has to be true.
I cant stomach to read history of UMNO which says Mahathir as the first President, because Onn Jaafar was the first President.
I cant take Sir Stamford Raffles as the founder of S'pore.
I like your stand; as it reflects a lot of wisdom in your opinion and I feel that you are sincere.
I must see in person bro. tq
Aspan,
The anonymous who alleged me to be one of the eleven is really ignorant.
ReplyDeleteI am not one of the eleven as I had no com[lain about unregistered branch as my branch was all managed above board.
As for the allegation that the 'geng 11' was supported by team B leaders, I would say 'yes' because the discussion was at Abdullah Badawi's house before it was brought to court.
Rais and Radzi Sheikh Ahmad were the two main leaders who assisted the case besides Marina being the main coordinator.
I cannot be one of the 11 as my branch was well managed and non were non member as the delegate.
I hope you are informed. Thanks.
Dia anggap Tun M dia a very perfect ,wonderful person dan maksum.
Having said that, perkataan "(BARU)" actually sengaja tidak disebut oleh pemimpin-pemimpin UMNO(Baru) as a ploy to deceive the masses. Acording to the law, they must use that word without exception.
It is not true.
